Very depressing. But the knee jerk reponse of many men AND women is that these women are "just whores". How many times have we, the somewhat enlightened lower middle class, in conversation or in real life taken out our vitriol when discussing a "slutty" person or someone to whom sex is transactional or use sex as a weapon. By treating ANYONE that way we are marginalizing them and actually encouraging the behaviour that we dissaprove of, I would even go so far to say that we are signaling our group approval of the treatment. After all, it's easier to bully, kidnap, control and indenture someone who has no friends or allies than someone who does. Having a lack of respect for all women embedded in your culture will inevitably lead to them being exploited.
Another thing is that the "oldest industry" is almost entirely unregulated in the U.S. Even though it is distasteful and seems counter intuitive, by leglizing and regulating the sex industry we can eliminate most(not all) of the demand for sex slaves and other illegal and abhorrent practises. In other words, bring sex out of the dark and it's easier to see (snicker).
The biggest problem is always the same, how in the world do we make people mature enough to handle sex?
Yup. Another analogous question, "how do we make sure that we raise men and women to respect women (or for that matter the human rights of EVERYONE!)?"
